Exploring the World of VFX Internships: A Learning Journey

Team yFX
Aug 2, 2024

Internships have always been a great part of our journey, helping us find many of our long-term team members. Recently, yFX Studios welcomed eight enthusiastic interns from Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi. These young visual effects artists and filmmakers joined us midway through their course and were with us for just about a month.

They followed a shot from concept to creation, shadowing the leads and artists through every department

As with all interns - Their enthusiasm was infectious. We are always happy to share our knowledge with such  eager minds.Given their limited time with us, every lead and artist took the time to break down their expertise, connecting the dots towards final delivery.

Their questions made us look closer at our own processes, and we found answers together when needed. It reminded us why we love what we do: helping the next generation of VFX artists grow and succeed.

Aleena writes,  One thing that stood out to me the most was everyone's patience, regardless of their roles in yFX. Especially all the Dept Leads and Supervisors who took the time to explain things to us, whether about VFX or general topics, instead of just brushing over it or directing us to online resources. The casual conversations we had with them, when they shared their own experiences as juniors/trainees, were an eye-opener.

Zaufishan Shikhar: My VFX internship has greatly improved my skills as an artist. I had the chance to see the entire VFX production pipeline at work. Every department in VFX plays a major role, and what we see on screen is a creative and dedicated team effort from each department. Yash Raj Studios gave us the  opportunity to learn holistic filmmaking from development and pre-production to actually seeing a live shoot in-progress and the state-of-the-art post-production facilities like recording, dubbing, foley. At yFX, the VP room stood out for me, where we got to experience some cool VR and AR in filmmaking. It was exciting to see the LED wall and the work done in Unreal Engine.

Tanzeel: My experience as an Intern in Yfx studios was immensely valuable to say the least. I had so much fun amidst learning and exploring.

Kojagari: More than anything I have renewed passion for modeling and vfx and a desire to be better. I got really interested in texturing after our internship. I wouldn’t have thought about it if I hadn’t been here.

Arfaz: It provided me with significant clarity and understanding of the VFX pipeline. We followed a well-structured plan that covered all departments, allowing us to learn about the entire production process with guidance from industry experts.I started off unsure of what to do but this internship got me interested in Animation and the FX department.

Sunan: The work is highly organized and structured to make the work procedure more efficient for the whole studio. It was great knowing on-ground work and how a VFX studio operates. I found the unreal and rigging Department quite fascinating, which I earlier didn't know much about.

Amber: We watched the VFX breakdown showreel and it was amazing. It showed how much hard work goes into making movies look fantastic.Practical sessions helped me understand complex concepts. Learning about tracking, rotomation and Layout showed me how CG elements are added to scenes accurately. As I got hands-on with modeling, animation, rigging, and texturing, I found new interests and understood the detailed work involved.

Izhar: Everyone at YFX is very clear about what they need to achieve. Every person in every department understands the common vision and aims to get it done. This program made me appreciate the fact that each and every VFX department is so important, unique and interdependent. VP lab, rigging and SFX were so fascinating for me.
